Work begins to re-build

So, there’s a lot going on with this site right now. For financial reasons I’ve had to abandon my Weebly hosting as they were increasing their prices and wanted to charge me a extra monthly fee if I uploaded video clips. I couldn’t justify the increase so decided to jump ship and and move in with the nice fellows at Hostinger.

It’s been, and still is, a steep learning curve. Weebly have their own site designer making it impossible; apparently, to just port my site from them to a new host, so I’m having to rebuild the site from the ground up. Maybe it’s not all bad as it will give me the chance to do some housekeeping but it’s very frustrating at times. I’ve worked with WordPress before; that’s what this site is built with, but trying to get the look and feel I wanted has been a journey in frustration. It’s not exactly what I wanted but I realised I was spending too much time just trying to get a nice look and feel and not actually creating any content, so time to just go with what I have… for now. I’ve no idea why the background is blue for example. I’ve obviously clicked on something. It’s staying until I can figure out how to change it.

I’ve basically got to cut and paste everything from the old site into this one and it’s a very slow process so you will just have to bear with me for a while.

One thing that I am pleased about is that I have a LOT of disk space available with my new hosting provider so I will be able to merge in my other site; 8870Adventures. This is a very niche site for anybody that remembers or worked with the Nixdorf 8870/Quattro range of mini computers. In fact the site was the almost exclusive source of any technical information on these computers and it would be a shame for the information to be lost. Anyway, as soon as HobbyElectronics its back properly back on-line I will look at moving the other site.

The other thing I’ve realised is that I didn’t like maintaining the old site. It was clunky to maintain, and Weebly seemed to keep fiddling with the user interface. I’d come back after a month or so to make some additions and things would be different. One update changed the way all the colours worked and it was impossible for me to match the colours with previous pages. Whilst WordPress has been a challenge, creating blog entries is pretty easy so I’m feeling a bit more comfortable with my choice to move to a new platform.

Ok, back to porting content.
